Here it is freshly opened up. There is some deposits in the carb that can be seen here, but overall I am pleased with the condition as a starting point.
I measured 5mm with a metric allen wrench. Here it is after all the venturis, jets and the like have been removed.
WEBER 28/36 DCD 20 CARBURETOR
I used some smelly aerosol carb cleaner and a new brass brush to clean it up. The cleaner ate through my gloves pretty fast so I was careful where I pointed it during spraying and wore my big safety glasses.
As you may know, these carbs were used on lots of vehicles, they can be adjusted for each type by replacing the proper jets, etc. My father in law has a Weber Book describing all of these adjustments and modifications in detail -- he was able to adapt a Weber 2bbl from a Ford Pinto to an Opel GT with jets purchased from a speed shop in california called Crazy Larry's or weber 28 36 dcd such.
Here's the info from the Weber Landrover Installation instructions: Start engine and maintain approximately rpm until normal operating temperature is attained and the choke can weber 28 36 dcd fully returned.
Weber DCD Carburettor
Set engine idle speed to approximately rpm, by adjusting the throttle stop screw. Adjust idle mixture screw to obtain the highest engine speed. The final adjustment is made by turning the weber 28 36 dcd screw approximately half turn clockwise to weaken the mixture and so obtain the exhaust emission value of CO 2.
The engine speed should now stabilize at approximately rpm. In one of the messages, one fellow's vehicle had failed emissions -- he then asked among other things what the point dwell angle should be. I enquired from British Pacific about this once, the fellow put me on hold and called a mechanic friend of his, the value he quoted was degrees.
I carefully adjusted my points with a feeler weber 28 36 dcd and then checked the dwell immediately after and, BINGO, 60 degrees!
